Moving & Packing Tips

Kim PhillipsLifestyle, Tips

The thought of packing for a move might seem daunting, but we’re here to make it easier with some practical tips to streamline your moving process!

Start earlier than you think you need to.
It’s wise to begin packing sooner than it seems necessary. Once your moving date is set, start by boxing up a few items daily, focusing on things you won’t miss in the interim, such as spare linens, seldom-used kitchen gadgets like the crockpot, or decorative items. By tackling a little each day, you’ll reduce the rush and stress as the moving day approaches, leaving you feeling more prepared and less burdened by the boxes still to be packed.

Pack an “open first essentials” box!
Use a clear bin if possible, and pack it into a car rather than a truck so that its easily accessible when you arrive at your new place. Fill this box with:

  • Hand soap
  • Toilet paper
  • Paper towel
  • Multi-purpose/ disinfecting wipes
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Trash bags
  • Corkscrew/ bottle opener (to celebrate the first night, duh!)
  • Paper plates & napkins for the inevitable pizza dinner
  • “Keep busy” toys for kiddos

Pack an overnight bag for you & your family.
Chances are, you’ll be too tired to unpack your things. You’ll want your essentials within easy access, including a change of clothes, toiletries, phone chargers, any medications you may need, your wallet, etc.

Make a good night’s sleep your top priority!
Be sure to put together and make your beds. The rest of the bedroom unpacking can wait, but a good night’s sleep will set you up well for the next day! Moving is exhausting, and what is better than sleeping in your own comfy bed?

Next, the kitchen.
Unpacking the kitchen will help you settle in nicely and allow you to start cooking meals in your new home. Remember, how you unpack is not set in stone, but give it some thought! Glasses, cutlery, and dishes near the dishwasher, mugs near the coffee maker, etc.

Lastly, don’t stress!
We know it is easier said than done, but do not worry if you don’t get every box unpacked right away! It can take weeks or even months to fully settle into a new home! Enjoy your new space, and remember it is ok to take your time organizing and unpacking. (For some organizing tips, click here.)Unpacking is also a great time to purge things you may have forgotten about or things you no longer have space for or want to make space for.

Oh, one last thing!
Remember to change your address! This includes Canada Post mail forwarding, ICBC, driver’s license,  your doctor’s office, banks, service providers, schools, and places of work.

We hope this helps! Let us know if you have any tips or tricks that helped you get through your move!
